Job Outlook for Psychologists

Job Outlook for Psychologists Student Resources Careers Print Outlook and Job Growth for Psychologists By Kendra Cherry facebook twitter Kendra Cherry, MS, is an author, educational consultant, and speaker focused on helping students learn about psychology. The future for psychologists looks bright, particularly for those in certain specialties. The Overall Job Outlook for Psychologists According to their 2016 predictions, the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Department of Labor predicts that the demand for psychologists overall will grow at a rate of 14 percent through the year 2026. While this is faster than the average for all occupations, actual employment growth may vary considerably depending upon your  specialty area and occupation. For example, the demand for clinical, counseling, and school psychologists is expected to also grow by 14 percent over the next decade, but the demand for social scientists is only expected to grow by 10 percent. If you want to go into an industrial-organizational career, the competition will be even higher, with growth only predicted at six percent. Because of the growing demand for psychological services in hospitals, schools, and mental health clinics, psychologists can expect to see more employment demand in these areas. Specialty Areas of Psychology Expected to Grow Of course, the job outlook may differ for various specialty areas within psychology. Job opportunities may be the most plentiful for those with doctoral degrees in applied specialty areas such as counseling or health psychology. As people become more aware of the need for and importance of psychological services, the demand for clinical and counseling psychologists is expected to grow. Such professionals may be needed to provide services to aging adults to treat mental and emotional distress in a variety of settings, and to treat veterans and others who have experienced traumatic events. School psychology  is also cited as an area that will experience strong growth in the coming years as awareness of the mental health needs of children increases. As issues such as behavior problems, special needs, bullying, and learning disorders become more prominent, the demand for qualified school psychologists will go up.  Because emotional and psychological issues can have such a powerful effect on learning, school psychologists provide a critical service as they help students cope with academic, social, learning, and mental health issues. Major Specialty Areas in Psychology Educational Degree and Job Outlook for Graduates The type of degree a job seeker holds also plays an important role in determining job outlook. Here is the outlook for different levels of education: Doctorate Degree:  Job prospects are strongest for those who have a Ph.D., Psy.D., or specialist degree in an applied area. As mentioned previously, school psychology, counseling psychology, and health psychology are cited as particularly strong areas. Those who have additional training in research methods, technology, and computer science may be at an advantage over those who dont have experience in these areas.Masters Degree: The competition for jobs will be especially fierce among those with a masters degree in psychology. For example, while there are jobs at the masters degree level for industrial-organizational psychologists, the availability of positions available with this type of degree is far more limited than it is for those with a doctorate. Other options for psychologists with a masters degree include working in counseling or mental health services under the direction and supervision of a licensed psychologist.Bachelors Degree:  The U.S. Department of Labor suggests that opportunities will be more limited for those holding a bachelor’s degree in psychology. However, those with this type of degree can still find entry-level jobs in areas such as marketing, case management, sales, advertising, teaching,  labor relations, writing, and criminal justice. 11 Things to Do With a Bachelors Degree in Psychology Why the Future Is Bright for Psychologists A shifting work landscape and recent changes in healthcare laws have added new elements of uncertainty when it comes to job prospects for new psychologists. The American Psychological Associations (APA) Center for Workforce Studies indicates that approximately 5,000 new psychology doctorate students graduate each year and enter the workforce. While psychologists working in direct-service fields may experience added competition from those with a masters degree in counseling or social work, the APA reports that there are a number of subfields that offer considerable opportunities for growth. These include neuropsychology, geropsychology, and industrial-organizational psychology (predicted to be one of the fastest-growing careers by the Bureau of Labor Statistics). Where Psychologists Can Work Why Adaptability Is Crucial The key to success in the workplace, the APA says, is adaptability. Psychologists must be adaptable, flexible, and creative, and perhaps most important, willing to apply existing skills and talents to new career paths. Psychology is increasingly a multidisciplinary field as professionals are asked to collaborate with a range of other professionals including doctors, educators, and other healthcare providers to meet the needs of clients. Finding a place in this shifting landscape requires psychology graduates to be both adaptive and responsive to change. What It’s Like to Work as a Psychologist

How to Make Nylon - Nylon Synthesis

Nylon is a polymer you can make yourself in the lab. A strand of nylon rope is pulled from the interface between two liquids. The demonstration sometimes is called the nylon rope trick because you can pull a continuous rope of nylon from the liquid indefinitely. Close examination of the rope will reveal that is is a hollow polymer tube. Nylon Materials a solution made from 6 g sebacoyl chloride in 70 ml heptanea solution made from 3 g 1,6-diaminohexane in 70 ml watermetal tweezers or forceps Make Nylon Use equal volumes of the two solutions. Tilt the beaker containing the 1,6-diaminohexane solution and slowly pour the sebacoyl chloride solution down the side of the beaker so that it forms the top layer.Dip tweezers into the interface of the liquids and pull them up to form a strand of nylon. Continue to pull the tweezers away from the beaker to lengthen the strand. You may wish to wrap the nylon rope around a glass rod.Rinse the nylon with water, ethanol or methanol to remove the acid from the nylon. Be sure to rinse the nylon before handling it or storing it. How the Nylon Rope Trick Works Nylon is the name given to any synthetic polyamide. Acyl chloride from any dicarboxylic acid reacts via a substitution reaction with any amine to form a nylon polymer and HCl. Safety and Disposal The reactants are irritating to the skin, so wear gloves throughout the procedure. Remaining liquid should be mixed to form nylon. The nylon should be washed prior to disposal. Any unreacted liquid should be neutralized prior to washing it down the drain. If the solution is basic, add sodium bisulfate. If the solution is acidic, add sodium carbonate. Proposal: Change in the fast food industry (we can take a specific restaurant like McDonald’s) to fight obesity Fast food and obesity The relationship between a nations fast food consumption and its rate of obesity has been studied. Schlosser said it seems wherever Americas fast food chains go, waistlines inevitably start expanding. Schlosser argues that the North America has the highest obesity rate of any industrialized nation. This is now a permanent feature on the McDonalds menu, which brings a healthier, lighter focus to the original menu, consisting of a range of products that have 10 grams of fat or less, per serve. * Introducing nutrition information panels on the packaging of regular menu items. Could she just say one normal thing? Thanks Crazy Mouth. He cocked an eyebrow at her. â€Å"I didn’t know you were coming to prom.† â€Å"I-changed my mind at the last minute.† â€Å"You look nice.† â€Å"You too.† Which was an understatement. He looked like a double stack of cinnamon apple pancakes with a side order of bacon and hash browns (extra crispy). Like the best thing Miranda had ever laid eyes on. She felt herself staring at him, then looked away, blushing. There was a moment of silence. Another one. Don’t let it go beyond four seconds, she reminded herself. It had to have been one second already; that left three, now two, say something! Say- â€Å"Are you wearing space pants?† Miranda asked him. â€Å"What?† How did it end? Oh, right. She said, â€Å"Because your butt is fine.† He gazed at her in that way he had like he was measuring her for a straitjacket. â€Å"I think-† he started, then stopped and seemed to be having trouble talking. Cleared his throat three times before finally saying, â€Å"I think the line is ‘because your butt is out of this world. â€Å" â€Å"Oh. That makes a lot more sense. I can see that. See, I read it in this book about how to get guys to like you and they said it was a line that never failed but I got interrupted in the middle and the line before it was about china-not the country, the kind you eat off of-and that is where the fine part was but I must have gotten them confused.† He just kept staring at her. She remembered the other advice from the book, â€Å"when in doubt, make an offer,† reached out, grabbed the first thing she could put her hand on, held it up to his chin, and said, â€Å"Nuts?† He looked like he was about to choke. He cleared his throat a few times, took the nuts from her, put the bowl back on the table, stepped toward her so that their noses were almost touching, and said, â€Å"You read a book about this?† Miranda couldn’t even hear his heartbeat over the sound of her own. â€Å"Yes, I did. Because clearly I wasn’t doing it right. I mean, if you kiss a guy and he pulls away from you and looks at you like your skin just turned to purple slime, clearly you need to spend some time at the self-help section of-â€Å" â€Å"You talk more when you’re nervous,† he said, still standing close to her. â€Å"No I don’t. That’s absurd. I’m just trying to explain to you-â€Å" â€Å"Do I make you nervous?† â€Å"No. I’m not nervous.† â€Å"You’re trembling.† â€Å"I’m cold. I’m wearing practically zero clothes.† His glance went to her lips, then back to her eyes. â€Å"I noticed.† Miranda gulped. â€Å"Look, I should-â€Å" He caught her wrist before she could take off. â€Å"That kiss you gave me was the hottest kiss I’ve ever had. I pulled away because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from ripping off your clothes. And that didn’t seem like the right way to end a first date. I didn’t want you to think that was all I was interested in.† She stared at him. There was silence again, but this time she didn’t worry about how long it went on. â€Å"Why didn’t you tell me?† she said finally. â€Å"I tried to, but every time I saw you afterward you disappeared. I got the feeling you were avoiding me.† â€Å"I didn’t want things to be awkward.† â€Å"Yeah, there was nothing awkward about you hiding behind a plant when I came into the dining hall at lunch on Wednesday.† â€Å"I wasn’t hiding. I was, um, breathing. You know, oxygen. From the plant. Very oxygenated, that air is.† Insert head in oven now. â€Å"Of course. I should have thought of that.† â€Å"It’s a health thing. Not many people know about it.† Leave until no longer HALF BAKED. â€Å"No, I’m sure they-â€Å" Miranda blurted. â€Å"Did you really mean that? About liking it when I kissed you?† â€Å"I really did. A lot.† Her hands were shaking. She reached up and pulled him toward her. Just as the music went off, the emergency-exit lighting went on and a tinny voice announced over a loudspeaker, â€Å"Please make your way to the nearest exit and leave the building immediately.† She and Will were pushed in different directions by the crowd surging to the door, being guided by four men in full body armor. The message kept repeating, but Miranda wasn’t hearing it or Ariel West screaming that someone was going to PAY for RUINING her NIGHT or the person saying that dude, this was the sweetest way to end a prom ever, man, he was so high. She was hearing again the one-two-three cha-cha heartbeat of Deputy Reynolds, slightly muffled by body armor. This was no drill. â€Å"It’s us, isn’t it?† Sibby said, rushing over to stand next to Miranda. â€Å"That’s why those storm-trooper guys are here. For us.† â€Å"Yeah.† â€Å"You were right. I should have stayed hidden. This is my fault. I don’t want anyone to get hurt. I’ll just turn myself over to these people, and they’ll have to let-â€Å" Miranda interrupted her. â€Å"After all that? With only three hours left to go? And you, blend-it-like-butter girl? No way. It’s not over. We can totally get out of this.† She tried to sound confident, but she was terrified. Just what do you think you’re doing? U-Suck channel demanded. I have no idea. Sibby looked at her, eyes blazing with hope. â€Å"Do you mean it? You have a way out?† Miranda swallowed, took a deep breath, and said to Sibby, â€Å"Follow me.† To herself: Please don’t fail. How to cite Prom Nights from Hell Chapter Nine, Essay examples

The Book Of Deuteronomy Is The Fifth Book Of The Bible, Or The Last Bo

The Book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible, or the last book of the Pentateuch. Deuteronomy literally means Second Law. This title conveys its nature and purpose. In other words, this book is a repetition of the law that was given to Moses and his people on Mount Sinai. It is also a completion and explanation of that law. Besides that, this book also continues on from previous events that happened in the first four books of the Bible. It helps to bring to focus and interpret the messages that are in the first four books. In Greek, Deuteronomy means a copy of this law in a book. In Hebrew, its name comes from the phrase, these are the words. The Book of Deuteronomy was written centuries after the Israelites had lived on the Land of Promise. Moses is believed to be the author. If he is the author, it was written around thirteenth century B.C. Joshua was most likely (although it is not certain) the author who concluded the book with the event of Moses's death. Moses relates all events that happen in this book with a spiritual lesson. He takes the laws that the Lord gave His people nearly forty years before the time that the writings of this book took place and adapts it to the people and events of that time. A main characteristic that sets the book of Deuteronomy apart from the other books of the Bible is its vigorous oratorical style. (The Holy Bible 147) In other words, it is a style which involves much thought coming from the author. The events in this book took place within no more than forty days. The events occurred mainly in only three places. They were in the plains of Moab, between the end of the wandering of the desert (which lasted forty years), and the crossing of the Jordan River. (Deuteronomy) The purpose of the book of Deuteronomy is to show the change in leadership from Moses to Joshua. It was also written to be a witness of God's relationship with the people of Israel. Deuteronomy begins towards the end of Israel's time of wandering through the desert. Moses gives them instructions concerning many different aspects of the life in the land they are about to enter. The first four chapters recall the time when the people came out of Egypt and died in the wilderness because of their numerous sins. It then shows how God faithfully brought the next generation to the border of Canaan, which was the promised land. The next twenty-four chapters recall the Law of God. In it, Moses repeats the Ten Commandments that had been given to him by God at Mount Sinai. Moses emphasized that God chose the people of Israel to be His people because he loved them, and they in return should love God with all of their heart and soul. Moses also shows the importance of worshiping God. From this section is where the name of Deuteronomy originated. The last six chapters prepare the people for the entry into Canaan. Joshua becomes the new leader of the people of Israel because it was near Moses's time of death. Moses teaches the Israelites a song to remind them of God's faithfulness in the people and how they should never be unfaithful to God. Moses then looks into the promised land from Mount Nebo, since he was never able to enter because of his unfaithfulness to God when he tapped the rock twice. He then dies. Today, the book of Deuteronomy carries many different meanings to Christianity. It shows us the differences between ourselves and God, laws and rules, and how Moses is a ?type' of Christ. (Deuteronomy) Deuteronomy conveys to us the nature of ourselves and God through quite a few different ways. One is by the sinful nature of man, which is quite apparent throughout the book. The book also shows the character of God, and how He was always very faithful to His people. Another thing that it shows us is the possibility of restoration through God's grace. The book also contains the laws, which are the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are in effect today for all Christians. They are a guide for Christians and

TRIANGLE FIRE essays

TRIANGLE FIRE essays Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, NY, NY-1911 Near closing time on Saturday afternoon, March 25, 1911, a fire broke out on the top floors of the Asch Building in the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. Within minutes, the quiet spring afternoon erupted into madness, a terrifying moment in time, disrupting forever the lives of young workers. By the time the fire was over, 146 of the 500 employees had died. The survivors were left to live and relive those agonizing moments. The victims and their families, the people passing by who witnessed the desperate leaps from ninth floor windows, and the City of New York would never be the same. The images of death were seared deeply in their mind's eyes. Many of the Triangle factory workers were women, some as young as 15 years old. They were, for the most part, recent Italian and European Jewish immigrants who had come to the United States with their families to seek a better life. Instead, they faced lives of grinding poverty and horrifying working conditions. As recent immigrants struggling with a new language and culture, the working poor were ready victims for the factory owners.(ilr.cornell.edu/trianglefire/). The Triangle Waist Company was one of the largest shirtwaist manufacturers at the time of the fire. Located in the top three floors of the ten-story Asch Building in Greenwich Village, it usually employed 900 workers. On the day of the fire, only between 500 to 600 workers were there. When the fire was out, 146 were dead. How the fire started no one knows. On the three upper floors of the building were 600 employes of the waist company, 500 of whom were girls. . The fire began small, but attempts to put it out failed. The fire jumped from debris pile to debris pile, eating up the fabric used in making the shirtwaists. The workers began to rush to the stairways and elevators. Some made it down the eight flights of stairs, though at least one door leading to the stair...

What Makes an Author Bundle Successful

What Makes an Author Bundle Successful What Makes an Author Bundle Successful? It’s no secret that we at Reedsy like to explore the power of communities and what they bring to authors and publishing professionals (maybe because we’re building one ourselves!). I firmly believe that authors grow stronger when they unite and work together, a prospect that–like indie publishing itself–only gets easier with new and better technologies. While the notion that â€Å"like attracts like† brings independent authors together with other indies, and hybrid authors in commune with other hybrid authors, the next wave of online community-building is a frontier awaiting those eager to experiment and explore new opportunities. Outside the Box: Women Writing Women is the perfect example of that: 7 indie and hybrid authors (all members of the Alliance of Independent Authors) launching  a â€Å"contemporary fiction† bundle, available for purchase on Amazon  for a limited time.Sharing resources, sharing readershipsThe idea behind such a co llective effort is simple: explore the power of the group. â€Å"I’ve admired the power that author collectives like Triskele Books have,† says Jane Davis, author of the novel An Unchoreographed Life, which is included in the Women Writing Women project. Creating a bundle, is, in a way, like forming a collective for a limited period of time.Boxsets usually have an â€Å"expiration date† that functions for two reasons: First, it creates a sense of rarity. This, coupled with the uniting of several prominent voices, makes it easier to generate excitement both among readers and in the media. Or as writer, editor, and bestselling ghostwriter Roz Morris told us in an email:â€Å"We’ve already been interviewed by The Guardian books pages, Books + Publishing (the Australian counterpart of Publisher’s Weekly) and have interest from the arts programmes of BBC Radio 4. If any of us had approached them on our own– impressive though our CVs might lookâ €“we probably wouldn’t have got even a reply.†More importantly, a bundle aggregates reader bases. While it’s likely that some of Davis’s readership already knows a couple of other authors in the bundle, they probably haven’t heard of a majority of authors included. So it’s still a bargain for them to get the bundle and the 4-5 books they haven’t read yet for $12.Cumulated reader bases usually result in cumulated sales. Though sales aren’t usually the #1 objective of forming a bundle, they can unlock additional discoverability potential. Let’s take the example of the Deadly Dozen. This boxset was released in March of last year by The Twelve, a consortium of thriller authors who joined their marketing and promotion efforts and managed to sell over 100,000 copies in the first six weeks, hitting both NYT and USA Today bestsellers lists.Though the boxed set was priced at a mere $0.99, appearing on both bestseller lists tre mendously increased the profile and discoverability of The Twelve, and gave its participant authors access to new readers they might have never have found on their own.The Twelve’s Deadly Dozen was pulled a few months after its release. The 7 authors from Outside the Box have also set an expiration date to the bundle: it will be available for 90 days, and not one more. Why run bundles on a limited period of time if they sell so well? First, there’s the rarity factor that comes with a â€Å"limited edition†. But more importantly, bundles usually record most of their sales in the first few weeks (as do most single books); box sets are more about aggregating existing readerships than finding new ones, unless you hit a list or special ranking or get exceptional PR – which all bring immediate results anyway. Once these readerships have purchased the bundle, there aren’t necessarily many more sales to be made.David Gaughran also shared a similar experienc e with me when I asked him about The Indie Author Power Pack, a box set he released in October 2014 together with Joanna Penn and Sean Platt/Johnny B. Truant:â€Å"The primary aim with the box was to shoot for the NYT. The original plan was to leave it up only for November and December for two reasons. 1) All the promo was front-loaded to try and hit the NYT so sales were naturally going to tail off anyway, and tail off faster than if we were aiming to, for example, maximize sales or maximize income. 2) Plan B if we missed the list was to slowly raise the price as it fell in the rankings and make some money out of it. And 3) Sales of the box set were cannibalizing sales of the individual titles, so it was always going to be a temporary thing.†Raising the voice and standard of self-publishingThere is something even more interesting in the Outside the Box initiative. When I asked the authors about their goals, they didn’t mention hitting lists or even making sales. Inste ad, they focused on the excitement this new projects brings both to them and to readers. Kathleen Jones expressed it perfectly in a recent email:â€Å"I’m intrigued by the contrasts and resonances that are set up when you put seven very different books and authors together. You know your work is going to be read by readers who wouldn’t normally have bought it. There’s an edge to that and it’s very exciting.†The main message that comes from this initiative, though, is really the desire to brandish and wave the indie flag as high as possible. By uniting 7 critically acclaimed works of indie contemporary fiction, their authors hope to demonstrate that author publishing is a valid quality route even in a genre that is still perceived by many as a traditional publishing chasse guardà ©e, according to Jane Davis:â€Å"I would like to change readers’ perception of self-published fiction, particularly those who are clinging to the belief that it i s the preserve of amateurs. I too was sold that line. The fact is that there is a new breed of hybrid authors who look at each writing project and decide if it is one to submit to their publisher or one to go it alone. With the Society of Authors advising their members that publishing contracts are no longer fair or sustainable, my belief is that the predicted growth in self-publishing will now come from authors who are currently under contract.†Roz Morris goes on to express a similar concern, which she hopes this bundle will continue to tackle:â€Å"We want to prove that fine, original authors are self-publishing as a mark of independence and integrity, and doing work of value and quality. You might ask: is that still necessary? Does anyone still consider self-publishing to be ‘vanity’ or second rate? They clearly do, because this is one of the issues we’ve been asked about most frequently.†To achieve this noble goal, the authors spared no effort whe n it came to giving the bundle the polished feel readers expect from sets managed in traditional publication. Each author contributed to production and promotion according to her strengths. Far from a collaboration in name only, the effort seems to have made a bona fide community of these writers that can only serve to better this project and the women’s individual endeavors.Finding the right balanceWhen we think about bundle success, a lot depends on pre-launch marketing and promotion, and on the number of authors involved. But I believe there is one inherent quality to a bundle that the author-partners absolutely must get right: the diversity balance. The books in the bundle must be diverse enough to make the box set interesting for readers (and to reduce their likeliness of having already read all its books). On the other hand, all books in a box set also have to be written in such a way that they appeal to the same target market–grouped either by genre, theme or cor e topic (non-fiction).Even within fiction, the landscape for bundles has become much more competitive. In his 2015 predictions for the publishing industry, Mark Coker announced that he believed this year would be one of collaboration between authors. If that is the case, we are about to see many more bundle efforts across all genres, which might threaten, in time, the â€Å"rarity† factor that has so much to do with their effectiveness. In that regard, the 7 authors of Outside the Box: Women Writing Women are ahead of their time; â€Å"contemporary fiction† bundles are rare due to the broadness of the generic distinction. But Outside the Box has been structured around an original common core that Joni Rodgers describes as â€Å"artistic integrity, serious craft chops and an unshakable belief that books by and about women are important.† Says Jane Davis:â€Å"I think it’s an incredibly strong set of books without borders. I don’t insult my readers b y assuming they only like to read one type of fiction. Visit any book club and you’ll see that readers welcome variety. But the irony of fighting against labels is that, ultimately, it was necessary to define what the box-set was about. Our decision was to focus on our characters and the boundary-breaking nature of our fiction.â€Å"It might very well be that OutsideThe Box: Women Writing Women is setting the template for indie author bundles in 2015. Here’s to their success.- - - We want to personally thank all the authors of â€Å"Outside the Box†, and David Gaughran, for their answers to our numerous questions on their respective experiences. This post was edited by our lovely editor Becca! You can find Ricardo (author of this post) and Reedsy on Twitter: @RicardoFayet  and @ReedsyHQ   What’s your take on author bundles?
